A chambermaid with four children and a drunk for a husband, in Sweden in 1925, falls pregnant by the Crown Prince of Sweden.
When it is discovered, the family is shipped off to Liverpool to avoid a royal scandal.
Gustavus is born half-way across the North Sea so that he has a dual nationality. The family arrive in Liverpool destitute because the husband lost all their money in a card game on board ship. It is snowing, the children are crying, and they have nowhere to live.
They are destitute and yet worse is to come...
