In 2009, Amelia was newly married and was starting a new business. Then a car wreck changed the course of her new life.
She was in a fight for her life. She was transported from Windsor to Bismark, North Dakota, which is a distance of 109 miles. She spent four weeks in the hospital and another two in a nursing home before she was well enough to go to her own home.
She is allowed to leave the nursing home only if she has someone to care for her. She moves into her sister’s home in Utah and continues to recover her health. She also has to recover the loss of her vehicle, her job, and her home in North Dakota.
“Mom, you’re not going to work. You can’t.” Brendan’s voice was impatient, and she could hear the edge in it. “Don’t you remember you were in an accident. You were pushed into a ditch. Your pelvis is broke in pieces, Mom. You’re not going anywhere. You’re not going to work for a long time.”
She knows that she must bring justice to the driver of the car that hit hers. As the case goes to trial, she does not get discouraged by the loss of evidence, the lack of support from the prosecutor, or the witnesses testifying against her.
She is guided by a sense of who she is, a child of God, and a deep moral obligation to speak her witness in support of herself and all victims.
